Matt founded Waterman with fellow director Chris Marshall in 2004. He has more than 20 years of private equity experience in New Zealand. Prior to this he worked for a London based hedge fund and was in chartered accounting.

Matt is a member of Waterman’s Investment Committee.

He is currently a director of Fusion 5, New Zealand Clinical Research, TRG Imaging, PBT Group and Provincial Education Group.

He was formerly a director of Academic Colleges Group, Express Logistics Group, Guthrie Bowron and David Reid Homes.

He was also Chairman of the NZ Private Capital Association from 2014 to 2018.

Chris founded Waterman with fellow director Matt Riley in 2004. He has more than 20 years of principal investment experience in New Zealand. Prior to this Chris worked in a management consulting role in London assisting mid-market businesses. 

Chris is a member of Waterman’s Investment Committee and is currently a director of Healthcare Holdings Limited, MFB Group Limited (My Food Bag) and a non-executive director of Lewis Holdings Limited, an investment company associated with Sir David Levene.

Barrie Brown is an experienced and highly respected company director with a thorough knowledge of the New Zealand business environment. Barrie was a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) for 25 years where he was head of Business Advisory Services. Barrie has worked with a diverse range of medium sized and large businesses.

Barrie has held directorships in both public and private companies. He is currently a Non-executive Director of Waterman's Investment Committee (Chair of Fund 1 and 2), Chairman of the NEXT Foundation, a Director of Project Janszoon, Chairman of Hutton Wilson Nominees Limited, an independent Trustee for the W A Stevenson Memorial Trust, and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand.

John brings to the Board considerable expertise in business gained in a career that has included executive and directorship roles at ICI, Morrison PIM Holdings and Wilson & Horton Limited.

John is a Non-executive Director of the Waterman Investment Committee. He is currently Chancellor of the Auckland University of Technology. John was previously Chairman of Academic Colleges Group, Hellaby Holdings Limited, Carter Holt Harvey Limited, Auckland International Airport Limited and the New Zealand Radio Network Limited and was a Director of APN News and Media Limited.  His involvement in the community includes being Chairman of the South Auckland Health Foundation and a Director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

Jacques Venter has principal investment, merger and acquisition and management consulting experience over a wide range of sectors.

Jacques has 10 years of private equity experience. Prior to joining Waterman, Jacques held roles at Fonterra, Jamieson Corporate Finance (London), BSkyB (London) and Deloitte where he gained extensive experience across domestic and international transactions, private equity, capital raising, corporate restructuring, advising publicly listed companies and providing strategic advice to high growth companies across a number of sectors.

Jacques is a member of Waterman’s Investment Committee.

Jacques is currently a director of Fusion5, New Zealand Clinical Research, TRG Imaging, PBT Group and Provincial Education Group and a former director of Healthlink Group. Other previous Waterman portfolio companies that Jacques has been involved with include Academic Colleges Group and Manuka Health.

Phil joined Waterman in 2009 and works with the portfolio companies to help develop and execute the strategic plan.

Phil has over 20 years’ experience working across a broad range of businesses to assist planning for and delivering growth. In addition to strategic planning, Phil can assist in operational projects and has designed, sourced and implemented solutions across the spectrum of business functions eg; end-to-end ERP solutions, PMO functions, CRM systems & Supply Chain.

Phil was previously a director of MFB Group Ltd (My Food Bag) and Guthrie Bowron Ltd.

Simon joined Waterman in 2018. Prior to Waterman, Simon worked for two years at Palamon Capital Partners, a mid-market private equity fund based in London with ~€1bn funds under management.

Prior to Palamon, Simon began his career in the advisory practice of KPMG Auckland before moving to Fletcher Building.

Simon graduated with an MBA from INSEAD in 2017 and is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

David joined Waterman in 2019. David previously held investment banking and corporate finance roles with Deutsche Craigs, KPMG (Toronto) and PwC where he gained extensive experience advising clients on M&A, capital raising, debt financing and strategy assignments.

David graduated from the University of Otago and is a member of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.

While at Macquarie, Aleksander gained significant experience across mergers and acquisitions and principal finance, working across a wide range of sectors, including: transport & logistics, industrials, financial services, FMCG, education and aged-care.

Aleksander is currently studying toward his CFA.

Amanda Smith has over 20 years  experience in various financial and management reporting roles. Amanda joined Waterman in 2006 and is responsible for the group's financial and investor reporting, compliance, investor liaison and fund administration.

After graduating Amanda worked in the Business Advisory team at Spicer and Oppenheim. She then spent four years working with investment banks in London and Moscow. Following her return from overseas Amanda joined Lend Lease as Finance Manager and then started a family before joining Waterman.

Shan began her career as a graduate in the Business Advisory team at Grant Thornton, Auckland. Here she qualified as an accountant and worked with clients from a range of sectors. She then moved to London for ten years and held roles at BP and Morgan Stanley. Shan joined Waterman in 2019 as Finance Manager, where she supports Amanda in the CFO role.
